My dog training journey began in 2006 when I rescued Lady, a 10-month-old terrier cross with a lot of baggage and even more spirit. People said I’d never be able to unravel her issues — but I was determined. I threw myself into seminars, workshops, books, and leaned on some brilliant reward-based trainers for support. In the end, that little ‘terror’ turned into a happy, well-loved companion who lived to 16.
I’ve been training dogs for over 30 years — from terriers to lurchers. I’ve competed in agility and obedience, but my real passion lies in helping others build strong, positive relationships with their dogs.
Today, I run Right Start Dog Training and love working with both puppies and adult dogs. I’m a proud member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), and also an Instructor Assessor for new applicants. Ongoing learning is a big part of my world — I’m always attending seminars and workshops to keep my knowledge fresh and up to date.
Behaviour has been a real passion of mine since those early days with Lady! I’m proud to be part of the team at Canine Thinking, led by behaviourist and canine wellbeing specialist Lisa Webb. I work in a collaborative role — supporting their clients when needed and referring my own when specialist help is required, especially in cases where pain may be influencing behaviour.
In 2012, I got involved with the Bedlington Terrier Rescue Foundation — a wonderful breed-specific charity run by a friend and the breeder of my current dog as well as one sadly now passed.
It felt natural to offer my training and behaviour experience, and I now volunteer as the charity’s Training and Behaviour Advisor, working alongside experienced behaviourists and wellbeing specialists to support adoptive and foster families. I’m also proud to serve as a Trustee.
I'm currently studying for an Advanced Diploma in Applied Canine Behaviour (Level 5) and was thrilled to join the Association of INTO Dogs in 2019 — a forward-thinking organisation promoting science-based, reward-focused training.
Outside of Right Start, I’m Chair, Treasurer, and one of the Senior Instructors at Sevenoaks & District Dog Training Society — a fantastic, positive training club that’s been helping dogs and their owners for nearly 60 years.
My experience / qualifications at a glance!
I have been running Right Start Dog Training for over 20 years. I love my work and enjoy helping dog guardians to build that special relationship with their dogs. I am also the volunteer Training and Behaviour Advisor and Trustee for the Bedlington Terrier Rescue Foundation - a rescue charity, close to my heart, that is fast becoming a flagship for Breed Rescue organisations within the UK.
Reuben is an 14 year old Bedlington Whippet cross – a special boy who very much enjoyed his agility training (now retired!) and we have achieved some great results together! He is always there at my side as the loyal Lurcher that he is! He tests lots of the new training toys that come on the market so I know what to use in my training sessions!
Tweed is a cute 12 year old liver Bedlington Terrier girlie and Reuben’s auntie!! They have a very special relationship! She is a real 'cuddle bunny'; just happy to settle on anyone’s lap that happens to be free! She is very bright and loves clicker training and masters everything at the first attempt but then doesn’t really understand why she needs to do it again!
At Right Start, we believe positive training and enrichment are the foundation of a happy, well-balanced life for you and your dog. It’s about more than following cues — it’s about building a joyful, fulfilling bond. Training should be fun, rewarding, and something you both look forward to!
